Luxury Car Sales Incresed in 2023, In the wake of Christmas festivities winding down, Indian automakers started unveiling their 2023 sales results. The year appeared to be a resounding success for the industry, particularly for luxury car manufacturers, who experienced record-breaking sales. As we delve into the sales figures, let’s explore the highlights and identify the triumphant players.
1st Place: Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz India emerged as the undisputed winner, achieving its best-ever year with an impressive 17,408 units sold, reflecting a remarkable 10% growth over the previous year. The robust demand was fueled by the success of their SUV lineup, notably the new GLC and updated GLE, alongside the GLA and GLS, constituting 55% of total sales. The remaining 45% came from the sedan lineup, with the E-Class LWB standing out as the highest-selling single model. Noteworthy was Mercedes-Benz’s threefold increase in Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), contributing around 4% to the overall volumes.
Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz India is not slowing down, with plans for 12 new launches in 2024, including 3 BEVs and top-tier vehicles. They also intend to inaugurate 20 new workshops, expand into 10 new cities, and invest Rs 200 crore in manufacturing operations and digitization.
2nd Place: BMW
BMW India secured a close second position, posting an 18% Year-on-Year growth and selling 13,303 cars. The BMW 7 Series earned the Premium Car of the Year accolade, contributing to the success of the BMW Luxury Class, which grew by a substantial 88% YoY. BMW’s BEVs experienced remarkable growth, with the BMW iX maintaining its position as the best-selling luxury EV in India for the second consecutive year.
Subsidiaries MINI and BMW Motorrad India also demonstrated significant growth in 2023, with MINI witnessing a 22% YoY increase and BMW Motorrad registering an impressive 20% YoY growth.
3rd Place: Audi
Audi India saw an astonishing 89% growth in 2023, selling a total of 7,931 units—the highest since 2015. Key contributors to this success were the Audi Q3 Sportback, Audi Q8 e-tron, and Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron. Audi’s used car division, Audi Approved: Plus, grew by 64%, showcasing the brand’s desirability in the Indian market.
Audi India also introduced customer-centric programs like ‘ChargeMyAudi’ on the myAudiConnect app, facilitating finding charging points, and inaugurated India’s first ultra-fast charging station in Mumbai.
4th Place: JLR India
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) India demonstrated impressive growth with 3,582 units sold and a notable 93% YoY growth in the last nine months. Range Rover, with a remarkable 250% growth, and Defender, with 150% growth, were standout performers. JLR aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2039, with plans for electric versions of Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender.
